Allergies? Earache?

Yesterday I took an (over the counter) allergy pill so that I wouldn't be hacking all through my dental appointment.  On second thought I probably shouldn't have and maybe that gal wouldn't have taken so long.  No she would probably have scraped even harder.

Anyway this morning I had a very hard time waking up when hubby told me it was time to get up for our walk.  I got up and handled the walk okay although the hacking from allergies had come back already (it hadn't been 24 hours since my allergy pill - that are suppose to last for 24 hours!).  But after getting back I grabbed a quick shower and started to get to work. My left ear started really itching inside.  I tried not to mess with it too much because I used to get a lot of ear infections especially in my left ear.  And I know scratching it doesn't help.   Then I started feeling really sleepy again and not feeling that well.  I was considering taking the rest of the day off sick but then I had some breakfast, my ear settled down a little (if you know what I mean) and I started to feel a little better.

I was able to put in a full day and felt better by early afternoon and feel okay now.  So I don't know if it was allergies flaring up again or I if got  "Day after Dental workout" sickness. LOL.

Relaxing with hubby now. So glad it is Friday.  Tomorrow I already decided I will just get up when I wake up. It is the only day of the week I don't exercise so it is a good time to catch up on sleep even if it is only about an hour or so.  Hope I can stay awake tonight to watch some Jimmy Fallon too.

Dislike some Dental Hygienists

I went to my obligatory six month check up today at the dentist's office. I don't think I've had the same hygienist in 2 years!  This one was very pleasant and we had some good conversation but as soon as she said she was filling in for someone I was thinking "Here we go again".

I know they have to SCRAPE the teeth to get tartar build up off but she scraped so hard that it hurt!!  She must have gotten near my nerve on the molars because I nearly yelled out "OUCH YOU"RE KILLING ME YOU KNOW".  But I didn't. I was afraid she'd say "Well if that bothers you, there may be an issue with that tooth".   I honestly don't have any trouble with my teeth in terms of cavities. I have not had an actual cavity in years.  But hey all my molars are either covered with crowns or have fillings in them so there aren't a whole lot of areas that cavity prone still at this point!

It seems to me even though they need to scrape they could be more gentle about it even if they have to scrape longer, instead of feeling like they are ramming that instrument across my gum/tooth line until I want to scream!  I know some of my teeth were bleeding as a result of her doing that too.

She asked if I floss. Yes I do every day.  I really do and brush my teeth 2 or 3 times a day. She asked if I also use any special brush to get in between the teeth. I told her I can barely get the floss between my teeth. As it is I use the GLIDE brand of floss for that reason.  So no, I don't use yet another instrument on my teeth. Oye!

Anyway, I'm glad it is done!  And that gal is moving out of the area so the chances of me having to let her in my mouth again are slim to none, so hopefully the next time I go I'll get someone gentle - if that is even possible.

I brought up my front tooth crown again and how much I hate it.  It is noticeably longer than the tooth next to it.  I may go the Invisalign braces route as that may be the best plan of action, get lowers straightened and then the crown replaced. The lowers are crocked and pushing that crown out too.  Will think seriously about it.

Don't believe me on the tooth?  I'll show you how bad it looks! Sort of blurry but yah UGLY right?!!

Popcorn Fixes

Hubby gave me a nice surprise this morning. He went to Ace Hardware to get a cork for a bottle I keep Olive oil in.  He gave me the small bag with the cork in it but then pulled out another bag and gave it to me.  It was popcorn! Yum!  Ace (at least the one here) has popcorn freshly popped every day for its customers.  So he got me a small bag.  It was just the perfect late morning snack.

That's not all. Nearly every Friday he goes to the bank for me because guess what, they have fresh popcorn every Friday there too!   Between that and my making popcorn once a week or so, I'm getting some great popcorn fixes lately!  Oh and I got some when we went to see Jurassic World Sunday too.

Today I didn't work past dinner time which was nice for a change. Things aren't quite as hectic at work these days which is a nice breather.  Tomorrow I have a dentist appointment during my lunch hour. Hopefully it is just for a cleaning and I've been flossing every day like a good girl too! :)   Fingers crossed for not a lot of scraping!! :)

Is it Friday yet?

I'm not the only one rushing the week along. Hubby thought all day long that it was Wednesday. He almost put our trash cans out too (trash day is Thursday).  I had to tell him a few times what day it was.

Yesterday I took Merlin to the vet as he had been limping sometimes on his left rear leg. Turns out he may have a slight sprain or very slight tear of a ligament.  The vet gave us some anti-inflammatory meds to try out.  She suggested Xrays but even after those she really couldn't tell how severe if any it was.  There is a 'specialist' down in another town that she could send the Xrays to and see if there was really something. She said if we wanted to be aggressive we could have that done and if they found something, opt for an operation costing upwards of $3000 which may not even provide 100% results.  Nope none of that sounded good to me.

I wanted her to treat him besides, not some strangers who sorry but likely want to line their pockets!
She also told me if there is a tear, if it is not severe which it is not because he's not holding his leg up all the time, just favors it at times, that some folks choose to do nothing and eventually scar tissue builds up but he can walk on it in time again with no 'favoring'. The end result to that is he may get arthritis there.  Well to me that sounds like the least invasive path.  So we're trying meds for 2 weeks and seeing how he is doing. Either way we're not planning on having an operation.  Don't get me wrong. I'd be the first one to pluck down that amount if I thought it was critical and necessary.  It does not meet either of these criteria.  So we'll see how he does.

He still runs outside if he sees a squirrel.  She suggested limiting his activity - ya right.  When we have the A/C going it is easier as we have the house closed up but not when we have the doors open.  I'm not going to confine him to a kennel either.  So Merlin, hope you get better on your own buddy!  We LOVE you!!!

Okay so I broke the rules...

...you know those unspoken rules about what one can and cannot eat at breakfast.  I was so aggravated about not getting to have a slice of the Key Lime Pie I made last night that I had one for breakfast!  Yup!  I did!  And it was great!  But I'm still not making it any time soon!!! It looks a little yellow as opposed to greenish because I didn't save the key limes to grate for some lime zest.  I probably would have shaved my knuckles anyway though as they were too small to really hold.

Hubby got the rest of my folks' garage all cleared out.  Now to get the car washed and put in the garage so that it doesn't have to sit in the hot near 100 degree weather day after day.

Here are some pictures of the garage as it is all cleaned up now. There were tables with saws, a lathe and other machinery on the one wall. Boxes of things and stacked up wood used for making lamps on the other side and not much room in the middle before he started working on it.  Great job hubby!!

Ugh

I had two goals this weekend in terms of making two things for desserts, one from my Southernbellegourmet.com businesss- 5 Minute Chocolate Fudge and Key Lime Pie that I had saved a recipe for.

I happened to have gotten a bunch of key limes in my Greenling order last week so wanted to make it.

Yesterday I made the fudge in 5 minutes, no problem!!  I did it in between working and going to my mom's. I even took some to mom for her to enjoy.  It really is great fudge considering it only takes 5 minutes to make.

Today I had some work to finish up and we were also going to see the new Jurrasic World movie. So I knew I still wanted to make the pie.  I made my favorite pie crust and froze a few more batches for pies to make at a later time.  I had mixed the crust right before heading to mom's to make dinner.  This afternoon after the movie I had gotten close to the 1/2 cup lime juice needed.  I discovered the easiest way to juice limes is to cut one into quarters and then squeeze.  That worked way better than cutting in half. But my hands did feel a work out by the time I was done squeezing them. Those key limes are tiny!

Okay so fast forward to after getting back from my mom's. I had to roll the crust and put it in the pie plate and bake it so that it was cooked.  Then made the lime filling.  But then that filling has to sit at room temperature to thicken.  Really???   No time given for how long this took.  I only waited about 20 minutes as there were 4 egg yolks in the key lime filling and I didn't want to leave it sitting out at room temperature too long.

Back just now from taking it out of the oven. It is nearly 9:00PM  Now it has to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate at least 3 hours until well chilled!!  Well I wanted a piece of this tonight! Not staying up past midnight to do that. So even if this pie turns out delicious I will not make it again any time soon. Talk about a pain in the ass!

So I'm sitting here watching Battlebots with hubby and having a glass of wine.  I really enjoyed the movie today and glad we went to see it.  I'm not trying to make my blog all about food now but just was really frustrated as to how long and how many steps this key lime pie took.  I'll let you know tomorrow if it is any good. I sure hope so!

Creative dishes

I often find myself experimenting in the kitchen. The other night I made stir fry veges with some of my Greenling order.  It included eggplant, peppers, Jews Mallow, Okra and carrots.  I had some left over in the fridge.  I also had some fresh lettuce that I had forgotten about (luckily it still had the root with it so it was still good enough to eat - yes after a week). Anyway I made a salad and added to it most of my left over stir fry veggies.  Here's the end product:

It actually tasted good!  This evening I made shrimp scampi (recipe found online) and had it with rice pilaf. It turned out really good and I made enough to take to mom for her dinner. She liked it (thankfully).

Well I just realized I forgot to brush the dog's teeth for the 2nd day in a row so I'm going to log off and go do their teeth before it is time to turn in for the night. :)

I Love bargain finds

Okay so this evening I was on the hunt for just one pair of knee highs that my mom could wear at night to keep her legs comfortable.  She just wanted one pair because if she didn't like them, and they were a multi-pack I'd just be taking them home to my house to use some day.  I don't wear knee high stocking hardly ever any more!

I decided to venture over to Walgreens before dinner and see what they had.  There were some that were two pair at the price of close to $4.00, and many just regular full panty hose.  Then my eye caught a clearance tag!!  There were two pairs of knee highs on clearance. They were normally $3.49 marked down to just .89 cents!  One pair had had a smudge on part of the foot area. It looked like someone had stepped on them or something.  The other pair looked perfectly fine, just the packaging had a smudge on it (who cares about that, it is just packaging). I was so happy to find this bargain!  My mom likes them fine (at least so far, she hasn't tried them on it), but I just had to blog about how cool it is to find bargains, isn't it?!

I really don't get out shopping much - too busy working a lot but when I do and I happen to stumble on a good deal, it sort of makes my day!  Too bad this didn't happen at the beginning of my day instead of near the end! :-)

Cost of Cancer Treatment!

This evening news had a story about how much it is costing for cancer treatment, not only the treatment but the meds necessary as part of the treatment. Once folks who have insurance caps out - which may be even as high as $1,000,000, they are left to fend for themselves.  With today's skyrocketing medical costs it probably doesn't take as long as one might think to get up to that $1M mark!  So then their are decisions to be made. Go into spiraling debt to stay alive or decide to let nature takes it course. Many choose to live as long as possible no matter what the cost, but I hope that is something that I will never personally have to face as I would likely just try to do everything on my bucket list that is important to me until I move on.

When questioned as to the reason for such high costs, one theory was one of the standards of economics that I learned in college. The price of cancer treatment is whatever the market may bear. Really?  Yes. It all boils down to the almighty dollar!  I do not know why other than for greed the costs for cancer treatment specifically must be so high.  Every year, if not every day there are thousands of people donating to cancer research and help. Where the hell is all that money going???  Research?  Is that research getting anywhere?  Isn't there any way some of the donations can go toward the medical costs?!

Of course the obvious question to me at times is why have they not found a cure by now?  Sometimes I can't help but wonder if there have been several cures developed for many types of cancer, but if everyone was cured swiftly think of all the money that they would lose?  I hope that I'm not right about that. It would be nice to know where all the money goes...

Hump Day

Yippee Hump Day and it is almost over!

Taking a break for dinner.  Tonight we're going to surprise mom with Dairy Queen and we're going to order it for ourselves too so we'll eat together.  I think mom misses someone actually eating with her as opposed to just sitting by her or doing something else.  I used to start the dishes while she was eating and decided to end my multi-tasking efficient self and sit and talk with her so that she could actually have some real company. :-)

She is handling things very well considering she was used to having my dad around for over 60 years, may have been close to 65, not positive.  Their anniversary was just last month. She really does get around with her walker quite nicely and I'm not so sure it isn't more of a security blanket than an necessary to use all the time sort of thing.  But anyway, who cares, if she likes using one, then so be it.

I just saw that DQ carries Orange Julius brand drinks. I used to love getting those at the mall back in PA. So I am going to see if they carry them at this location near by and get one to wash down my burger.  Yum!

~ Long Time ~

Yes I know it has been over a month since I blogged.

My father died June 27th and that was the reason for my not writing prior to then and the funeral was July 6th, partly because my sister was too busy with the scheduled events for her son, to have it the week before. Sorry but that is the absolute truth!

There are so many things I can say surrounding my father's death and funeral but I will just let it be and say I'm sure glad I don't have to go through this again except for one time when my mom dies. The same obstacles and conflicts will be there then too but for now I'm just getting back into the groove.

Things at work are busy as usual. I did take a few days off bereavement and actually had a day and a half off (office closed) for the 4th of July celebration so I was actually off nearly a week. But that was a few weeks ago now so it is back to the norm.

My hubby did a wonderful job cleaning, sorting and selling all of dad's tools and equipment that were in the garage.  Unfortunately he didn't take a 'before' photo with all the clutter, dust, saw dust and grime that have built up over the last 9 years.  Here's everything all organized and priced. The garage sale was a great success thanks to my hubby! All proceeds went to mom of course!   Will post 'after' all cleaned up in another day or two.

I'm back and will try to blog every day again.
