Last blog of 2013

Staying up with the youngest until midnight to ring in the New Year. Hub petered out about a half hour ago. We got Thai take out for dinner, yum!  Watched New Year' Eve with Carson Daly. It was better than Ryan Seacrest!  Now ice skating is on. Only about an hour to go.

Happy New Year!!!  I only have 51 minutes of battery power, so I'm logging out soon.

Back blogging next year!  :-)

2014 Resolutions?

Here comes that time of year again.  The time to think up some New Years Resolutions and see if I can stick by them, ha-ha.  I don't know if I'm going to make any that will really stick.  I know the ones like losing weight often fail, but I don't have that resolution.  I am very happy with my weight and fitness level. In fact sometimes I wonder if I may be a bit of an exercise junkie.  On the days that I don't walk at least a mile and a half or do my work out exercises, I feel listless and like a blob.  :)
I can't explain it any better than that.

After I banged my funny bone on the sink in the bathroom this morning I thought of the first one I should declare. I should resolve to stop hurting myself in stupid ways in 2014, like banging my elbows, knees or shins because I'm not paying attention or doing something too fast! Inflicting unnecessary pain is something I can do without!

Another resolution I should have is to not beat myself up (figuratively in order to abide by the first resolution) for not doing anything at times. I often feel like I must be doing something every day so that I don't feel like I wasted the day.  If I am not working, I feel like I have to be doing something...whether it be researching on the Internet, playing games on Goodsearch that earn pennies for my favorite charity or even the mundane such as cleaning.  But it is okay if I don't do anything except space out at times, and I need to accept that (sans guilt). The body and brain deserve and need down time to rejuvenate -- right? :)

I'll see  if I come up with ant others in the next day or so, but I'm not putting a lot of thought into it. I don't know if I really believe in resolutions anyway. Resolutions are an all or nothing kind of thing. I'd rather have goals and desires,  Those allow for a slip here and there.

Last day off..

Today is my last day off until next year, LOL!

Yesterday the youngest and I did go see the Hobbit movie.  I asked her on the way over if it was the second one to one that was out previously and she didn't think so, turns out I knew something she didn't (for once).  So it was the second Hobbit movie and by the end we realized it was the second of THREE!  So...now I want to see the third one which comes out next year, likely near the end of next year too.  I enjoyed it, even though I hadn't seen the first one. I liked the special effects.  I have seen all of the Lord of the Rings series so that helped some.

I got all the Christmas cookies narrowed down to 2 containers (from 4) so making headway there.  It helped that we took some to my folks and some to my sister's on Christmas day.

It was cloudy, windy and cool today so it wasn't exactly wonderful out, but we walked all the dogs just the same.  So I got a double dose of exercise since I work out Sunday mornings anyway, but I like keeping up with walking the dogs, more than just once a week.  They really are calmer when they've had a walk.  If I had the time, I'd walk them every day, but during the work week, there isn't enough time. When I do walk during the week, if hubby doesn't go with me I do take at least one of the dogs.

I have kept up with brushing their teeth. Tika is getting a dental next month and I'm hoping one of her large teeth in the back doesn't need to be pulled.  It has a really dark spot near the gum line. Fingers crossed it is just plaque.

Funny

Here I am watching bathroom makeover shows on the television.  Every bathroom they are destroying, I sit here and say "It doesn't look bad at all", or "well that tub isn't permanently mold stained like ours."  LOL.  So the ones that are being redone look nice to me.  Guess that really drives home the point that we need a bathroom remodel.  The side of my sink faucet even has eroded (the chrome on the left side that comes out from the faucet, (not the spigot itself).  It still works and doesn't leak so it is fine with me for now.  We could get a plumber out to install a new faucet (that wouldn't match the other one - we have a double sink), but I'd rather just hold off until we get the bathroom redone.  I am waiting to see how secure my job is over the next few months and if all is well will look at getting estimates this Spring.  Hope it won't be too terribly expensive!

Keeping this one short, going to walk all the dogs (2 at a time).

Friday in the Square

Had a great day off today!  When the youngest finally got up and showered ;-), we were out the door before 1:00PM headed to the town square. I love going there as the shops are quaint and that great Thai restaurant is down there as well.  I originally was just going to just get some soup to have something light but decided to go ahead and order off their lunch menu. After all it is only $6.50 and includes the soup of the day!  We both had enough leftovers for lunch tomorrow too.

They served hot and sour soup.  I had never had that before.  I don't really care for it because it is a bit TOO spicy hot for me and because of that it took a while for my Pad Thai to taste like it should.  Even though we did not eat until somewhere between 1:30 and 2:00, it was pretty crowded there, the most people we've ever seen in there.  It felt good for it to have more than one or two tables of people in there. Nice!

We strolled around the square and did some shopping too.  I used most of the gift certificate I got from the youngest too and got two scarfs from my favorite shop Hummingbird Hollow.  It is a cute shop with clothes and other novelties mostly for women.  It has very reasonable prices and many unique things.

I had to keep reminding myself today that it was not Saturday. :)

Tomorrow we are planning to see the new Hobbit movie I think.  There is something about seeing a movie with good special effects on a big screen with a bag of popcorn.  Gotta love it!

Vacation

Christmas is over but I had off today and also do tomorrow so it is great to be on vacation!

Being off I have been watching some morning television like the Today show and noticed that nearly all of the women on the show are wearing sleeveless dresses!  Hey ladies!  It is WINTER!  I haven't thought about wearing a sleeveless dress in months at this point.  I wonder why they wear sleeveless dresses when it is wintertime.  We're talking areas like NYC, not somewhere hot like southern Florida either.  My youngest had a theory that maybe the studios are hot with all the lighting, but I don't buy that because the men all have shirts/ties and sport coats or suits on and they don't look a bit overheated.  No sweat can be seen on any of them ever.  I suppose everyone can wear whatever they like no matter the time of year but I just find it really odd to be wearing sleeveless dresses in winter.  I guess that is no stranger than seeing guys wearing shorts, even when it is in the 30's outside.  Who knows.

This evening we made crab stuffed mushrooms (Red Lobster's recipe according to the email) which were good but I noticed way after eating them, that the sautéed celery and onion never got added (that I was cooling in the fridge). Darn!  I hate when that happens!  I saved them for when we have stir fry which will probably be Saturday as tomorrow is usually pizza night.

I just watched the women of SNL on TV and there were some nice classic comedy skits that they showed including ones with Gilda Radner and  Jane Curtin. I like most of those older ones vs the newer casts with the exception of Tina Fey and Kristen Wiig.  Even those two are not on the regular cast anymore now that I think of it.  I still watch it, mostly for the hosts that are on it, but usually can't stay awake through the whole show anyway these days. :)

Merry Christmas 2013!

Well Christmas has sort of snuck up on me while at the same time it seemed like it would never get here! :)

I am happy that I have the next 5 days in a row to spend with my family and relax.  I am ready for Christmas this year and although I am missing my oldest daughter, the youngest is here and we are making the best of it without my oldest here.  Maybe next year? :)

At least we will get to see her in August when she is getting married. Anyway, this evening is relaxation time with hubby.  I just got a cup of water and some of the goodies I made to snack on and we're watching Long Island Medium.  That Theresa Caputo is the real deal!

If I was alone I'd watch It's a Wonderful Life, but hubby doesn't really care for it. Sometimes I wonder if there are any men out there that actually enjoy watching White Christmas, It's a Wonderful Life, Sound of Music...etc.  I think NOT.

Merry Christmas Everyone!!

Pics of goodies!

Okay I took photos of the cookies made yesterday and chocolate chip cookies I now have done.  Don't worry Stac, we'll have more to make when you get home.  :-)

Hubby took the next picture.  I exercise every other day to a show I used to exercise to back in the early '80s that I taped way back then.  Anyway the dogs love to pester me. Here is a shot my hubby took while I was waiting for the cool down portion (I raise my head straight up for 8 seconds and then back down - trying to prevent DOUBLE CHIN).  :-)

Molly is at my sneaker which she likes to play with, Merlin is licking (cleaning my arm) and I am rubbing Kaci's leg which has arthritis in it, and Ditzy is supervising (watching) all this.  Tika was not in this picture but I'm sure was not far away.

Hump Day...

So, I know I haven't written much lately, but there really isn't much to blog about these days. I did get some baking done and would go take pictures of what I made if I didn't have Ditzy tucked under a throw blanket on my lap. :)

I'll snap a few pictures tomorrow and post them then.  I am making a few different things this time around besides the standard chocolate chip and spritz cookies. I made Vanilla Almond Snowballs and Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Balls.  Guess you could say I made a lot of Christmas balls!  :-)

It has been more Texas mild the last few days getting up to the 60's. I prefer that to the cold wave we had been having. It may even get up over 70 degrees the next few days. I'll take it!

Sunday evening..

A few days ago I received a Christmas gift from my parents. It was a gift box from Harry& David.  When I opened the box with the pears in it and the box with 2 apples in it, I couldn't believe it!

Harry & David is suppose to be the best fruit ever!!  So naturally I expect the fruit to look pretty flawless.   This looked appalling to me!!  I got better looking fruit from the local farmers market.

I have had two pears already and they taste fine, but I peeled the brown skinned areas. I am going to show these photos to my parents too so that they can think twice before next Christmas.

I hope this next week goes fast.  I only have to work Monday and Tuesday the following week and then am off the next three days for Christmas so that will be great.

15 days to go....

Well there are only 15 more days until Christmas.  I have been working on the Angel Christmas cards as well as our own personal ones and have done a total of over 250 cards already. Go me! :)

I will still do some more Angel cards, probably about 50 more, hey postage is expensive! There are a lot more names this year too, more like 400. Last year there was less than 300 names and I send a card to all on that list.  We'll see how the rest of this week goes.

It is still cold here too although it did get up over 40 degrees today so the walk to my mom's wasn't too bad today.  It is still getting down into the 20's tonight but after that it is forecasted to be a bit warmer. Thank God!  Hey I moved to Texas for the warm weather!  ;-)

I am already tired of it getting dark so early but still have a few more weeks to go of that too, until it starts staying lighter a little longer. I get through it, yes I will.  Hurry up December!

Cold weekend...

It was and still is cold!  I couldn't stand it anymore yesterday even though the wind chill was only in the 20's I had to get some exercise (walk), so yup I took Molly and Merlin and went for my regular walk.  I wore my winter coat (that I've had since living back east), hat, scarf, and extra thick socks.  But it was very cold!  My legs were getting stiff and a little numb and my fingers were also feeling the cold (gloves were thin).  I got through it and was glad to get the blood pumping again but when the other 3 barked at me and ran into the garage for their turn I had to turn them down.  It took me a good bit to thaw out!

I worked on the Angelcardproject cards this weekend and did a bit of shopping for less fortunate folks as well as some for family.  I did get 120 cards done already so that is a pretty good start.

Watched some Christmas movies today too while working on the cards. There were some on the cable channels like Lifetime.  They are pretty good and help get me in the Christmas spirit. :)

Tomorrow starts another work week. The good news is though, only 4 Mondays left to go this year. Woo hoo!

Brrrrr..baby it's cold outside

Well another Arctic blast has hit the area. There were even some schools that were delayed today. It is 30 degrees out now and the wind chill is 18 degrees. So I will skip my walk this evening not because I can't hack the freezing weather but because I don't want to hit a patch of ice as I'm walking and fall flat on my back or worse. So I will pass today and see how it is tomorrow (which isn't suppose to be any better).  This would be a good time to have a treadmill...but really have no where to store one so I'll just walk outside when I can.  Besides walking inside I won't get to see all the deer and squirrels like I usually enjoy!

Corporate office for my work is in Dallas and the office was closed all day from the ice up there.  Unfortunately it was never conveyed as to whether us remotes were also off when the office was closed down, so I dutifully reported to work virtually and put my full day in.  I may ask about company policy about that just in case it happens again due to the weather.

Well the weekend begins...off to order our Friday night Pizza. :-)

Decorated for Christmas

While I was in the office today, hubby handled most of the Christmas decorating.  Here are pictures of the inside of the house once it was totally done.  We don't bother with a big tree these years since it is just the two of us for the most part. I think we have plenty for us! :)

The burning bush?

Hubby was looking outside our back door this evening right after dinner and he urged me to come look. The way the sun beam was hitting a tree it looked as if we had the biblical burning bush out back!

Here is a photo of it and then cropped for a closer view.

I am so glad Cyber Monday is almost over. I've been bombarded with emails all day long. Some of the tempting ads offered a whopping 50% off but I managed to refrain.  I really don't need anything for myself and I usually get gift cards to give for Christmas gifts. Haven't found a place yet that offers a discount on a gift card.  ;-)

An apple I can relate to

Thanksgiving has come and gone and had a great visit from the youngest who was here for a week which was great!  Dad came over and shared his company for Thanksgiving dinner too (and took home a full plate for mom plus leftovers). It was very nice and the first time I ever made crock pot apple sauce. It turned out pretty well, but next time I think I will only use a dash of cinnamon.

The night before Thanksgiving, the youngest and I made some apple pie and pumpkin pie.  I had to share a picture of an apple that I can relate to.  I have never seen an apple with an outie!  I've had an outie all  life and was self conscious about it for a long time including only ever wearing one piece bathing suits. Now that I am middle age and my skin is let's just say not tight, it actually no longer appears that I have an outie.  Darn, sure it has to be when I'm way past the age of wearing a bikini!

Prep Time

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I have started to get some things prepped already.  Last night my youngest and I made crock pot peanut clusters. Super easy and super delish!  I am freezing some to pull out at Christmas time.  Here's a picture of them.  Looks like I must have a candy shop doesn't it? :-)

Late this afternoon and evening will be pie baking. We're making Apple Crumb and Pumpkin pie. Then I want to also get the potatoes done and ready to go into the crock pot tomorrow (refrigerating overnight will probably let the sour cream and cream cheese, etc flavors really blend in too).

Hubby came back Monday from being back east since the 19th. He has a good friend in PA that he has missed and who has missed him so we booked him a flight and a bargain one I'd say since it was only about 2 weeks out that I booked it. It was only I think $359 round trip including tax. We did the non-refundable ticket as there was no need to make sure it was refundable. He was going and I never go anywhere. However by that Friday I learned that I was to go to corporate (for work) the same week. After finding out the non-refundable ticket meant we'd lose $200, I begged off from the work trip and it was granted, luckily.  I have only had to go to corporate one other time this year for training and had no idea anything like this was planned.

Anyway I have to say although I missed him it was nice eating all my veggie meals, watching whatever I wanted on TV and having the toilet seat down all the time, well he's usually good about that. The only part I hated was at night. Yes I still tend to get scared like when I was a kid. So I'd leave the TV on with the volume way down.  The first night I left it on until the following morning close to 6:00AM. Then next night it was before 5:00AM. Then by Saturday the youngest came home for Thanksgiving break so I didn't leave the TV on any more after that. :)

Thanksgiving week

Here we are at the start of Thanksgiving week, and what better way to start it off than by eating out with my youngest at The Wildfire.  Yum!  I haven't eaten there since New Year's Eve (it isn't very cheap).  We each had a shrimp dish and each brought about half of it home.  That's fine with me.  I don't have to wonder what I am going to have tomorrow for lunch.

It has be cold and rainy all weekend.  The temperature has stayed just warm enough though that we have not had any ice/sleet.

Even though I have to work this week it will be special since the youngest is here to visit!  We went shopping today for the turkey and all the fixings.  I'm glad that I found every thing I was looking for! We are going to make both apple and pumpkin pies this year.  Thankfully I already have two pie crusts in the freezer.  I also have a peanut chocolate bark to make so we will probably start making some things Tuesday evening, so that everything isn't left for Thursday.  I want to use the bread maker on Thanksgiving too. I have only used it once and it would be nice to have some nice fresh bread on the table. My mouth is watering just thinking about all this FOOD!

Hump Day

It was a nice warm day today but it is suppose to get colder and rainy over the weekend. Ick!  Oh well can't have perfect weather forever right?  Then I wouldn't have anything to complain about.

Heard on the news that they are making all new commercial buses have seat belts installed for additional road safety.  However this does not apply to school buses. Seriously?  And what is going to keep the kids safe when the school bus crashes? The back of the seat in front of them?  NOT!  I remember how hard those backs of the seats are. I've banged my knees a few times on them in my childhood.

I signed up for the Angel Christmas card program again this year.  I feel like it is my way to help spread a little cheer during the holiday season.   If anyone is interested here is the link (this is in the US only, but if you are in a different country you could always consider starting one of your own).
http://theangelcardproject.com/

I need to get our annual fur kid Christmas picture taken (we do it ourselves), so that they are ready. I got a bunch of tiny scarfs for pets at the animal shelter's garage sale and I want to put one on each dog's neck for dressing them up a little.  Maybe I will get that done this weekend.  I'm getting two of the dogs groomed on Saturday so maybe Sunday would be a good day.

Nice Weekend

I just got back a few hours ago from going to my youngest's for the weeekend.  It was the first time I drove to her apartment but it was an easy enough, pleasant 3+ hour drive.  She has a nice 2 bedroom apartment in a nice gated complex.  We got pizza Friday night to keep up with the tradition (Friday nights are Pizza night (and beer for me).  So that was nice. Thanks Todd for letting me have one of your beers.

While visiting her, we took her dog Bailey to a dog park and it was nice to see her playing and getting along off leash with several dogs.  I doubt mine would get along so well with other dogs. They are so territorial and are bad barkers. Doubtful I would ever try something like that with them.  Too risky.

We ate dinner last night at Carrabas.  It was so good!  It has been well over year since I've eaten at one. There are not any close by so we just don't get there. We didn't have to wait too long either to get seated, only about 25 minutes.  It was delicious and we had the leftovers today for lunch.  Yum!

I noticed while driving back home that there are some oddly names streets or creeks. There was one sign for a road named Westward Ho. Too funny!  I do believe it was headed the right way too!

It is always amazing to me that no matter what the speed limit is, there are always drivers who will go faster. I followed the speed limit the entire trip and no matter what the limit was there were those who passed me. Who cares? Well I do.  Think about it. If everyone was going no higher than the posted speed limit, NOBODY would be passing!  One of the toll roads actually has a speed limit of 80 mph and I got up to that speed limit though I don't usually like to go that high, as an experiment to see if anyone would pass me. Yup!  Several cars did.  Some had to have been going at least 90 mph.  Unreal!  I wish there were a lot more police staked out on those roads, but I am glad to say at least I arrived home, safe and sound.

Cold morning..

I know it is November but this is Texas and it doesn't need to get down to 30 degrees at night just yet!  Luckily it is only to be this cold another night and then it won't be as cold at night.

My laptop is fried.  I can't get anything other than a gray screen (from spilling coffee on it two days ago). Oh well, at least I don't think I had anything major on it...until I have a Duoooh! (think Homer Simpson) moment.

Looking forward to the day off Friday and visiting with my youngest. Not a whole lot to write about this evening, so keeping it short.

Gross!

Those of you who know me, know that I try to eat healthy every day.  I do have my treats now and then like a Sonic Blast, but I even got hubby to buy Plain Greek yogurt today so that I can make smoothies with unsweetened yogurt, fruit, local honey and flax seed. This is what I had today for lunch.

Hubby bought something akin (but way far akin) to burgers that he thought looked good and wanted to try with tots for dinner.  They are called Johnsonville Grillers and they looked really, really gross raw so I dug the box out of the recycle bin to look at it. "These are cheddar cheese and bacon flavor pork patties", I started to read to hubby. "What?  I thought they were hamburger, not pork".  Nope they are pork. I proceeded to read the box. 1 patty is 460 Calories.  Calories from Fat are 350! 39g of fat, 14 g of those saturated fat. Cholesterol 100mg, Sodium 1040 mg!  I could feel my stomach starting to churn (not in a good way) at my reading of all of these things. One of the ingredients was powdered cellulose!  Cellulose! Might as well just slap that right on my thighs!

Needless to say I pretty much lost my appetite for it by the time it was on my plate. Ugh.  I managed to get down almost half of it. Although it was pork, it was rubber-like consistency. For once hubby who usually loves junk food, agreed with me and didn't even eat most of his second burger.

Makes me wonder if I really should start doing the grocery shopping again. ;-)

Oh this morning I spilled coffee on my laptop and thought it was okay as I dried it out well, got it to start okay, but then screen turned 50 shades of pink/gray so...may not be okay.  I turned it off and will try again tomorrow.  Thank God I still have my trusty ol' Toshiba laptop!

Veterans Day

I want to thank my father who served in WW II, my uncle who also served then and whom I never met as he died abroad, and all others who have served or are serving in the military currently for their service as that is after all what today is all about. No it is not about having the day off, which I happen to have, nor about all the Veteran's Day Sales out there, and no I didn't go shopping.  I did spend some time cleaning up my desk that I spend all my work day at and it looks de-cluttered, clean and ready for work again.

I also walked all 5 dogs again.  I was going to take my pedometer to see just how long it really is to walk 4 way down and back and the one around the block, but I think it needs a new battery.  I'm sure it is at least 3 miles.  It is a beautiful afternoon out there and there are a lot of flowers in full bloom this mid November. So since I haven't posted any pictures in a while I took the camera with me when I walked Kaci around and here they are.  If you click on each one, you can see the larger photo of each.

Glad

I asked hubby this morning if the dogs woke him up last night when they were carrying on barking while I was trying to nail that big waterbug. He was so tired from working on the animal shelter garage sale that he didn't hear a thing.  But he did make me very glad because he told me he killed it this morning.

He saw it in the kitchen on its back flailing its legs so maybe I did get it a little.  Either way, I don't have to be looking for it. That is until the next one that gets in the house.

Didn't do a whole lot today but that was fine with me. Sunday is the day of rest right?  Saw a few B movies on cable, played with the dogs a little and tried to relax.  Things at work are evolving and not sure in a good way. That can stress anyone out.  I will just hope (and pray) for the best and try to just enjoy life outside of work.   Speaking of which I have off tomorrow too - Veterans Day!  Yippee!

Bug!

OMG!  A big assed friggin roach (they call them water bugs here) is in the house!

Merlin just went up to it and sniffed it! I saw it then. Walking along the edge of the dining room and jumped up to get it. There is a thick piece of wood we got today at the animal shelter garage sale (a sign) and I tried to jab it (hard) with it.  I may have grazed it with one whack, but it got away. ARGH!! It went under the water cooler.

The dogs of course gave me crap so I'm letting it go for the night. They bark loudly and try to attack the thing I use to try to kill the bugs. Like they are their friends or something!  We already let the geckos go that we see, but these big ugly things are NOT Welcomed.

That was good?

Surprise!  Blogging before work today. I wanted to share that the local city council election was won by the opponent and not the woman I wanted to win.  Lost by 110 votes.  What surprised me was the low number of voters!  The total votes were 1282.  But word has it that was good! That was a better turn out than last time.  Seriously?  This city has over 50,000 residents. Now granted it was not a national election but still, what is more important to vote on than who is going to sit on the council for our very own little town?  The place where we pay taxes, live and attempt to thrive?  That is of the utmost importance to me.  It just floors me that less than 3 percent of the town chose to vote and with early voting available too?!  It wasn't held just one day that might not be possible or a real inconvenience to someone. There were 11 days in which to vote and several locations available as well.  I can only hope the elected council member will do right for this town. At least I know I voted and if anyone complains about the new city council they will likely be guilty of not getting off their butt and voting!

Well today is my Friday as I have tomorrow off. Yippee!  I hope today is a nice day and goes fast! It is a chilly 39 degrees out right now. Brrrrr....Thanked my hubby for having the heat on in the main living area by the time I came down in my exercise garb this morning.  There is nothing worse than trying to warm up when your muscles are constricted from being COLD.  ;)

Off to work..

Election Day!

So I just checked the current results of our local City Council election that I voted early for last week.  It doesn't look like the candidate I voted for is going to win, but it ain't over yet.  By the time I go to bed this evening the final results should be in.  I guess I'm just a bit excited since I actually and spoke with this candidate a little and she lives in my own neighborhood.

Early this evening hubby saw a rainbow and pointed it out to me.  It was really pretty and was nearly a full one.  It was nice to see.  I haven't seen a rainbow in quite a while.  My dad was here too for a few minutes so he got to see it too.

Had a nice visit from my youngest over the weekend but sadly by the time she got home on Sunday, she was sick with a fever.  She found out today she has strep throat.  She probably picked it up from school (she's a teacher). Hope she feel better real soon!

I have a short work week this week as I have Friday off. This weekend is the animal shelter garage sale too that my hubby was coordinator for this time around.  It should be a great sale.  Hope they do well!

Sunny day!

This morning I did some cleaning.  Mostly concentrated on the first floor, okay only concentrated on the fist floor.  And I didn't clean really thoroughly but it is better than it was.  Dang!  I just remembered that I did a load of laundry today that is still sitting in the washer. I hate when I do that!

I just plain forgot!  I was cleaning the living room and then did the dishes, then made a banana smoothie for breakfast, and after that I just plain forgot.  I just put it on 2nd rinse tomorrow with a cup of vinegar and it will be fine.

I walked all five dogs today, two at a time and Kaci last. My youngest walked Kaci with me as she had just arrived for a short stay (going back tomorrow).

Since I walked a bunch today I think I burned enough calories to treat myself to a Sonic Blast, so we had dessert (mine was free due to the coupon I printed out), from Sonic.  Yum!

Yay!

I did it! I blogged every day last month!  Hope I wasn't too boring. Some days it is just tough to come up with anything interesting to write about.  Tonight I am taking a break. It is Pizza night and GRIMM.

Bring it on!!!

Happy Halloween

Hope everyone who wanted to was able to go trick or treating tonight.  I heard weather back east is pretty bad. We had a lot of rain last night 4-6 inches, Austin was hit even worse. Yes we're all in drought but getting too much rain too fast is never a good thing. They showed footage today in the news of houses flooded and it brought back memories of the flooding when I was a kid.  So glad I don't live in any flood area here!

We did not get any kids here tonight and had our light off outside but I also did not hear any kids outside so if there were any trick or treaters, there weren't many.

Hard to believe tomorrow is November already. Only another month in 2013 and Thanksgiving in a few weeks.  Now that Halloween will be over this evening I'm sure the Christmas commercials will start flooding the television.   This weekend we turn our clocks back an hour too. So it will be getting darker even earlier (but also light earlier in the am). May have to walk exclusively at lunch time because it will be too dark to go after work and likely too cold to go in the morning. I'll figure it out.

Rain, rain come and stay!

Getting some much needed rain today.  Yippee!  Got a nice walk in during my lunch hour while it was actually not raining then.  I was grateful for the break in the weather as I really enjoyed walking today. I took Molly with me so that at least she got a walk in herself.

Tomorrow is Halloween but we do not usually get many kids so we are going to just leave the lights off.  I really hated those people who left their lights off when I was a kid.  But I am only doing it because we get very few kids.  When I was a kid there were tons of kids in our neighborhood and well worth while for folks to stock up on candy to hand out.  :)

I remember when I was a kid, we often just make costumes out of things we had.  I remember going many times as a hobo, or a witch (using the same witches hat we always had and an old gray wig). It was not like today where so much money is spent on costumes often worn no more than once. My kids occasionally got new costumes but there were several times things were recycled a few years later, and then again.... remember girls?  :)

Margarita night!

Found out Tuesday is Margarita day at La Playa, a nearby restaurant that we rarely frequent. Margaritas are I think $2.24 or $2.22/each all day. So I told hubby we should go there for dinner for a nice break to the week.

We ordered a nacho appetizer that was suppose to consist of shrimp, crab meat and cheese on tortilla chips. Well we got it and it was covered with some tomato (Pico de Gallo?) sauce.  Tons of minced tomatoes was all we saw, everywhere.  I took one look at hubby's disgusted face and asked them to take it back and leave the tomatoes out. After all it wasn't even in the description anywhere!  The waiter was very nice and did just that.  We loved it.  I also got a margarita, actually 2 of them, frozen!  They were good.

Dinner was good and I got enough leftover vegetable fajitas for two nice sized lunches. Wow! Great portions!  Now that I got hubby to like it okay we'll eat there every few months, on Tuesdays though so that I can get happy hour priced Margaritas!

Expecting some heavy rain storms for the next couple days.  Bring it on!  Will help this drought we're in!

Monday done

Today is done. Time to relax.  This evening I took a walk alone with my hubby and none of our dogs. This way we wouldn't have to stop every two houses and I wouldn't have to hear hub get mad at their barking.  It was nice for once to do the straight walk and I probably get a better cardio work out from keeping up the pace.  Do I feel guilty for not taking any of them?  Yes, but still glad.

Going to watch some Long Island Medium so keeping this short.

Day before Monday...

At least after tomorrow there will only be 9 more Mondays for the rest of the year. That doesn't sound so bad.

This morning I was watching some Face the Nation and thinking about what I wanted to get done today. Every day I feel like I need to get something done so that it makes the day worth while.  I knew I was going to do some laundry but wasn't sure what else.  As I was thinking about my day, Molly was jumping up like she wanted to be on my lap.  I picked her up and let her lick my face a while and cuddled her. Then it dawned on me. I don't really have to be doing something constructive to be making a difference. My dog needed to be held and loved and I was already doing something worthwhile today. :)

That made me relax and not think so much about what I was going to get done today.  After giving Molly some attention, Ditzy wanted some cuddling, So it was her turn and I was glad to do it.

I did get 4 loads of laundry done later and asked hubby if he'd help me walk 4 of the dogs at one time, me two and him taking two.  We got through it but not without Molly and Merlin barking and making the walk difficult for hub.  I'm not going to do that again. He gets too mad and then the whole walk is tense. I walked Kaci around the block after that.

I was going to do the walking this morning but we had a steady stream of heavy drizzle.  Made me think we were in Seattle or something as that was the sort of rain it reminded me of (from what I have seen on television about weather there, never actually been there).

Picked three peppers from the balcony garden. There are still a few left.  I haven't totally decided yet whether I want to have a garden over the winter or not. Leaning toward not, but haven't totally decided yet.

Time for a change

This morning we took Tika and Merlin to the vet for their check up. Remember my vet retired in June unbeknownst to us.  I didn't know the vet who took care of our dog when we went the last time but I figured she'd be the same one we'd see this time.
When I walked in they had remodeled the waiting room and all the exam rooms.  It looked nice but I was just surprised.  When we got to the exam room I was surprised to see the examining table upright against the wall (like a murphy bed).  It definitely made the room larger but I felt like we just went from one waiting room into another.

Then the vet tech came in and instead of just taking the first one to weigh him, he said that since we had both dogs how about if they did the exam, shots etc in the back and just bring them back when they were done. We sat dumbfounded and just said "Yes'. I wasn't expecting that. No wonder the exam tables are upright, guess their new remodel included a whole new way of doing business.  While I LOVE the gals that work at the desk and the vet techs are nice, I do not like this new procedure.  They brought one dog back, took the other, then brought the 2nd one back and we spoke briefly to yet a new vet we had not met before.  Before we left the parking lot we decided that was it. We are finding another vet.

Dr Koy was friendly, asked how we were when he came in, examined the dogs in front of us, telling us the heart and lungs sounded fine, range in motion good, eyes, etc, and told us what shots they were getting, etc.  May not seem like much but it was a personal touch.  Today, basically took the dogs back, then brought them in, "All done". Except they both need dentals. I knew one needed it but didn't know the other had a tooth that looked bad. That I appreciated, but the rest of it, nope.

I like a dog examined in front of me.  Maybe I would think of something I'd want to ask.  Anyway, going to check out another vet that was recommended by a friend.  I understand the owner of the practice resigned, and they wanted to remodel but changing the down home, almost country doctor type of service soured us, and possibly will others. I don't know. I don't care about others, all I know is we are never going back there again.

I voted too, so that is done. Glad I voted early and there were no lines!  Since it is the Saturday before Halloween and not much on TV, watched a zombie movie. Fitting for the season, don't you think?

Weird Molly

Molly, one of my tri-colored shelties has been bugging me this week.  She never jumps up while I'm sitting at my desk but this week she has been jumping up nearly every day several times, and today I let her up on my lap. Unfortunately for me she scratched my neck pretty badly as she jumped up trying to get her footing and scraped right across my scar from having the skin cancer removed. Ouch!  That really hurt!  But luckily it did not bleed.

I let her sit on my lap a few minutes but then she had to get off so I could get back to work.  Then a little while later she was jumping up at me again. I left to go to the bathroom and when I came back she was sitting in my chair.  And she's been jumping up pawing me for most of the week.  She's been eating fine, walking fine, etc., so I don't know what the deal is.  She may be spooked by something but for 5 days?  I'll keep my eye on her and keep searching for any info on the Internet but not sure what to make of it. She does not appear to be injured or hurt at all either.

Tomorrow two of the fur kids have vet appointments (not Molly) for their regular check ups. But I may mention Molly's behavior to see if the vet has any clue.  Then I am going to vote sometime tomorrow as well.  Not much else planned.  Will do some light cleaning at some point this weekend I'm sure and some laundry.  But will take some time to relax too.

Surprise!

Surprise!  I'm not waiting until the end of the day to blog for once.  I got done work and decided to write before shutting down my desktop for the day.  It is another beautiful day here with blue skies and 81 degrees outside. Well now anyway, It was 46 this morning when I got up so it was nippy then.

I haven't posted any pics in a while so here are a few to prove how blue the sky is today.  Also random ones of some of the fur kids.
Blue sky (and looks like dirty camera lens)

Another pic just to prove to you that I didn't just hold up a blue piece of paper and take a photo

Ditzy doing what she loves!  Playing ball

See the arrow that goes up Molly's nose?  Neat huh?

Molly ignoring me

Everyone posed fairly well for this one...only one not in pics is Kaci. She was being lazy and staying indoors!

Hump Day...

This week is going to seem long since I don't have any days off now until next month.  Oh well.  I  changed things up a little today and took my full hour for lunch and walked Merlin and Molly my regular walk.  It was nice taking a break in the middle of the day.  It was beautiful out!  Blue skies as far as the eye could see and about 75 degrees.

Then after dinner I took the plunge and took all 3 of the others.  A bit tangling of the leashes and I didn't go quite as far because I was worried Kaci couldn't go quite the distance, but we got through it. I even picked her up a few times for a little bit, when she was really panting. She was a trooper though and I felt good that I actually walked all 5 dogs today.

Hey I discovered something really cool the other day that I didn't realize.  I have a Sonic card and reload it every so often. Well when you reload it with $25 you can get a free sonic blast, or tater tots, etc. I haven't bothered printing the coupons for those for several months but thought they'd only be good for that month anyway, so I let it go.  I have to print the coupons on my old computer because it doesn't work on the new one and then it will say it already printed (wasting the coupon).  But anyway, I was on the old computer looking something up and decided to check out the sonic website.  There were several coupons I had not printed out yet.  So I tried printing a coupon for a free sonic from last December.  It printed out and is good for a month!  I did not know that it worked that way.  How cool!  So I printed out two more coupons for a sonic blast and tater tots, practically a full dinner! :)  Will use those next week.  I love getting free food (hey I would have spent the money anyway).

One Year

Today I celebrate working at my current job for one year. Woo hoo!  Here's to five more to come, right?!

There isn't a lot new to blog about today. No more squirrel attacks by my Merlin - thankfully.  I haven't seen any squirrels anywhere in the yard today.  They probably all spread the new about our terror dog and are staying out of the trees and telephone poles within a 5 mile radius of our house!  LOL

It is that time of the year here where it is cold in the morning and then in the mid 70s by afternoon, so it layers in the morning and shedding a layer in the afternoon.  I have turned the heat on just one morning for a few minutes to take the chill out of the air.

Early voting started this week and since I actually am familiar with one of the local candidates for once I think I will get it done early, maybe Saturday.

Well that's it for today.  At least I remembered to blog before I was about to turn in for the night. :O)

Ewww!

Merlin caught a squirrel this evening and ate the head off of it!  Ewwww!!

He has never done that in his 6 1/2 years, in fact none of our shelties ever killed and ate any animal.  Hubby saw him chewing on something and holding it in his paws and he ran down and got the rest of it with a shovel that we disposed of.  Gross!  Hopefully he  will be fine thinking about bones mostly. It is just a dog's natural instinct to kill and eat I know so I am hopeful there won't be any issues. He's sleeping like a baby right now.  We didn't yell at him or anything because again, it is a natural thing for dogs.  But I just never thought it would happen.

Hubby said he saw him watching the squirrel from one of the back steps he likes to hang out on. I guess he took it by surprise because like I said I've seen him chase lots of squirrels up a tree but never actually caught one.  I actually thought they were more like his play friends because they seem to tease him from way up on the wires.  Guess they are no longer friends when he actually catches one!

I had a hard time eating dinner as this was right before then.  But I managed.  Oye!  I do hope it doesn't happen again.

Beautiful Day!

Today and yesterday were beautiful sunny days, not a cloud in the sky today that I saw anyway. I did not take any walks today since I already exercised this morning and wanted to give my legs a break from walking.

I got the powder room clean, washed our sheets and also did some baking/cooking.  I had a bunch of key limes that I got in my Greenling order a few weeks ago that I haven't done much with. I used a few in my sun tea but that was it.  So I found a recipe for key lime bars online and made them this afternoon with fresh key lime juice. Yum! I've never made them before but they are really good!

Then I also had about 8 small red potatoes left from that same Greenling order so I sliced them and put them in the crock pot with a little butter and then sprinkled the rest of some grated Monterrey jack and cheddar cheese over them and cooked them on low. I threw in a yellow pepper from my balcony garden too. The cheese melted nicely over the potatoes and turned out great. We had them with dinner.

It was a nice long weekend. Back to the grind tomorrow.

Why?

Why do folks think that they do not have to clean up after their dogs when it poops on the edge of the street?  Don't they realize that people walk along the street so we can step in it and get it stuck in our shoes? It is always a big dog's poo too! I jumped out of the way just in time today. Makes me mad. These are probably the same people who walk their dogs after sun down or before sunrise so that no one sees them.

Anyway I got 4 of the dogs walked today, so 3 miles.  There were some loose dogs which I always hate because I don't know if mine will try to attack if they come up to them, but luckily I got the loose dogs to stop coming our way. They looked like they were just trying to be friendly, but mine are not socialized.  I know, shame on me.

Got some cleaning done this morning. I really really hate cleaning.  The dirt and hair just multiplies that much faster with 5 dogs.  The only way to truly keep up with it would be to clean every single weekend, but I don't.  I just cannot see spending a good chunk of every weekend cleaning. But the living room, dining and kitchen look great for at least a few days.

I took a break and watched Zorro so that was nice.  Also my daughter's boyfriend's mother just came back from traveling back east and she was so thoughtful! She brought a six pack of Yuengling Lager for us. We love that beer and can't get it here. We're going to savor them.  Hubby and I split one before dinner. Thanks Melanie!

Nice day off

I had a nice day off!  I started off sleeping in until after 7:30AM which is longer than I usually sleep. I would have slept longer but Tika and Ditzy were taking turns licking my face which woke me up.

I did four loads of laundry today and a lot of it was clothes with instructions 'lay flat to dry'. Of course I rarely lay things flat to dry, but rather throw them over a hanger pole (wooden rod) that is in the laundry room. This time I had so much though that I used both bathroom shower curtain rods, and doubled up on the rod in the laundry room and also placed one top (flat) on the washer.  Phew!  I should have planned that better to not do quite so many clothes that cannot go in the dryer. Lol.

I also walked two dogs before lunch my regular walk. Then about an hour after lunch I walked two more the same walk while hubby walked the fifth one a short walk (she has a leg that would bother her if she walked the long walk with me).  Then after dinner I took the same walk with no dogs but with my hubby. So I walked 4 1/2 miles today. It felt good! Hoping I am not sore tomorrow or wake up with a charley horse!

It was yummy pizza and beer night as we do every Friday night. I actually ate half the pizza, probably built up my appetite with all the walking I did. Now I'm relaxing and watching Blue Bloods while all the dogs are snoozing away.

Ouch!

We give our dogs those Dentastix every evening to help with their tartar build up and I think they help a lot but one of the dogs, Tika often gets a stick stuck in the roof of her mouth from side to side.
Usually I catch it right away but I didn't see it until she was flailing her paw to her mouth to get it unstuck.  I reached in to get it unstuck from the roof of her mouth and yup, got bit.  Bit me good!  I went and washed it up and put a band aid on it, yes it was a puncture bite.

I couldn't be mad at her. She was freaking out because she couldn't get this thing that probably felt like a thick stick out from the roof of her mouth.  I'm just glad her tooth only penetrated one side of my index finger, the opposite side just got indented temporarily.

So, I got through another work week. Yes tomorrow is Friday but I have it off.  It has been rather nice using up my vacation days a few times a month for these last few months.  It really creates a nice break.

No plans for tomorrow yet, other than my walk.  It has been pretty cold in the morning so I won't be walking first thing.

What a crock!

Today I made a recipe I found on the Internet using some butternut squash and sweet potatoes that I got from my Greenling order a few weeks ago. What?   You thought I was saying something else in my post title?  :-)

I also added 2 red peppers and 3 green beans from my balcony garden. I know 3 green beans is not much but keep in mind this is from a plant I didn't even plant this year.  It was from a seed from last year that just grew on its own next to my zucchini that died.

Here are the before and after pictures. It was really good!  I even have some left for lunch tomorrow.

 Here is the before

Here is after. It smelled so good (cinnamon, apple juice, brown sugar and butter) made up the sauce that it cooked in
Here it is plated.  I scraped the squash out from the skin, sweet potato halved, red pepper and the 3 green beans.  Great veges!!

Tuesday eve

I got through my first day back to work this week.  It did keep feeling like a Monday but it all went well and I managed not to misdate anything. :)  I am glad I didn't forget to go to my mom's to visit as she really looks forward to my visiting her while dad is directing his bridge games.

It rained again today, not a lot but was cloudy most of the day. Expecting more rain tonight/tomorrow. The temperature has dropped by more than 10 degrees and it is a cold wind outside. And it is going to be so cold tomorrow that the high is only going to be 58. That will be the coldest day here so far this fall. Yay though as I get to wear something new (warmer long sleeved tops).  :)

Getting ready to watch Person of Interest.  That's it for now.

Bracing myself?

Remember, I went to a new (to me) dentist last month to get long overdue cleaning done, but I really
went because I had a tooth that was bothering me.  Otherwise I still probably would
not have gone yet to the dentist.

Anyway this dentist is wonderful, caring and attentive!  Wow.  Who woulda thunk?
She partially cleaned my teeth, did the rest this morning and I am now fitted for a
temporary crown as well while waiting for my new crown, which will be tooth color
and already I am happy because the temporary crown looks so much better than
how my tooth looked before with the dark metal (old filling) showing every time I
smiled.

I told my dentist something else that has been bothering me.  It has bothered me
that my front tooth (crown) sticks out more than
my natural (other front tooth
next to it). Also it is longer than my natural tooth, which
I chalked up to just
aging and using my teeth for several years since getting that crown.
I am self-conscious about it and don’t like to smile with my mouth open because of
it.

She saw my dilemma but also pointed out to me that the reason the crowned front tooth
sticks out is that it has been hitting one of my lower teeth that are crowded. So one of my bottom teeth being out of line pushes against my upper tooth every time I clamp down. Wow, I never
really thought about that. She suggested I may want to consult with an orthodontist.
What? Orthodontist? Me?  Been there..done that..30 years ago.  She told me that she
has some patients in there 70’s that wear them.  So I suddenly retracted my dismissal
of the whole idea.
She also pointed out that my teeth angle inward and that is causing cracks on my
molars because I am biting more on the side of them (crunch after crunch), and that
causing cracks, not good.  ((I’m sure it doesn’t help that all of my molars have fillings and a few
have crowns, so they are already weakened due to that fact (that is me stating this
fact, she didn’t point that out)).
I didn’t realize that angled teeth causes trouble)!  So their office called the Orthodontist office near by to see about a free consultation. They actually could get me in right away, so I headed on over there.  Not exactly excited spending half my day off at dental offices but hey I was off so decided to go for it.

So here's the scoop.
I am a good candidate for the Invisalign braces for my teeth, which is a good
thing because I don’t want to go the full metal mouth route.  That I would probably not
opt for.

The cost is close to $6 grand. Oye. So now it is decision time. I can see how it will help my teeth
in the long run, and I can get the crown replaced after they are all straight with one that
will stay in place. Or actually I’m going to ask my dentist if I can’t just get my shorter
(natural) front tooth veneered or bonded to lengthen it and leave my existing crown as is,
and make
my natural tooth to match (which would save me the cost of getting a new crown).

They will accept monthly payments which would help and I guess I am just struggling with
the question of do I want to spend $6 Grand on getting my teeth straightened out at age
56?  I just didn’t think I’d ever get braces again. I went through the whole thing when I was 12-13,
getting 4 teeth pulled first, then the braces, rubber bands, retainer, etc.  This of course would
be easier with those invisible braces, but do I want to spend the money? Decisions, decisions...

Soggy Sunday

Making this short but I did manage to stay awake for SNL last night and although I like Bruce Willis, I didn't care for last night's SNL.  I didn't even keep it on after about 40 minutes.  Oh well. Got lots of rain last night and some today. It is raining now too.  Some areas in Austin got over 10 inches of rain overnight!  We only got about an inch or two so far  in our area but it will definitely help the drought situation.

The youngest and I walked 3 of the fur kids before she headed back home today.  It was nice walking with her again and of course having her home.

Tomorrow I have the day off due to Columbus Day. I have a dentist appointment as she needs to finish cleaning my teeth and start the crown work for that tooth that needs one.  I suppose she'll take a mold and perhaps drill and put a temporary crown on it. Not looking forward to it but it needs to be done and since I like this dentist I am not as anxious about going like I was the first time.

That's it for now. Nite!
